Medicare Advantage Plans California 2027: Why Your Plan May Be Disappearing (and What to Do About It)

Did you receive a letter saying your Medicare Advantage plan may not be available next year? If you’re comparing Medicare Advantage plans in California for 2027-or reviewing options in Arizona, Nevada, Texas, or Washington, don’t set that notice aside. Knowing what it means and acting by the right deadline can help you avoid a gap or an unexpected change in coverage.

The good news is that you have options. The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) runs October 15 through December 7, 2026. This guide explains what a non-renewal notice means, what may happen if you take no action, and how to review your choices.

1. What does a plan non-renewal notice mean?

A non-renewal notice means your plan will not be offered for the coming year. Medicare says your plan sends a Plan Non-Renewal Notice in October when it is leaving the Medicare program. The notice tells you to look for new coverage for next year.

A plan may also change its service area or network. These changes are not all the same as a plan leaving Medicare, so read the notice closely. It should explain what is changing and what steps you may need to take.

If the letter is unclear, contact the plan using the phone number on the notice. You can also check your options through Medicare Plan Compare.

Keep the notice and make a note of any dates it lists. If someone in your family helps you review coverage, share a copy with them.

2. What happens if you do nothing?

If your Medicare Advantage plan is ending and you don’t choose another one, you’ll generally return to Original Medicare when your current plan ends. For plans that are not renewed for 2027, that usually means the current coverage ends December 31, 2026.

Original Medicare includes Part A and Part B. It does not automatically mean you have the same prescription drug coverage you had through your Medicare Advantage plan. If you need drug coverage, review whether to join a separate Medicare Part D plan.

You may also want to explore Medicare Supplement Insurance, often called Medigap. Medigap helps pay some costs in Original Medicare, but when you can buy it and what options are available depend on your circumstances and state rules. Check your rights and timing before making a change.

If your plan is not ending but is changing, doing nothing may leave you enrolled in that plan for another year, but with its 2027 terms. Check the plan’s notices to understand what will change.

3. What are your options during AEP?

During AEP, you can compare available coverage and choose the option that fits your needs. From October 15 through December 7, 2026, you may be able to:

  • Choose a different Medicare Advantage plan.
  • Return to Original Medicare and, if needed, enroll in a separate Part D drug plan.
  • Review whether Medicare Supplement Insurance may be an option for you.

A request made during AEP generally takes effect January 1, 2027. The plan must receive your enrollment request by December 7 for the change to take effect on that date.

Compare more than the summary page. Check whether your doctors, hospitals, prescriptions, and preferred pharmacies are covered, and review plan costs, rules, and benefits that matter to you. Details vary by location and individual needs.

4. Which deadlines should you mark?

December 7 is the key date for making an AEP change for coverage starting January 1. If your plan is leaving or changing, begin reviewing options as soon as you receive its notice rather than waiting until the final days.

If your Medicare Advantage plan is not renewed, Medicare also provides a Special Enrollment Period from December 8, 2026, through the last day of February 2027. This gives eligible members another opportunity to switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan or a Medicare drug plan. If you don’t join another Medicare Advantage plan before your current plan ends, you’ll generally be enrolled in Original Medicare.

That period can be a useful backup, but it’s better to compare options during AEP if you can. Choosing before December 7 gives you time to confirm your selection and prepare for January.

For official details, see Medicare’s Open Enrollment guide and its information about Special Enrollment Periods.

5. Why review your plan even if it’s staying?

A plan staying available does not necessarily mean its details are staying the same. Each year, review the documents your plan sends about coverage for the coming year. In particular, look for changes to:

  • Doctors, hospitals, and other providers in the network.
  • Prescription coverage and participating pharmacies.
  • Costs, coverage rules, and referrals or approvals.
  • Extra benefits you use and any eligibility requirements.

Your specific situation matters. A plan that worked well this year may fit differently if your prescriptions, doctors, or health needs have changed. Confirm important details directly with the plan and your providers before enrolling.

6. A simple checklist to guide your review

Start with the notice, then compare the details that affect your care.

  1. Read every page of your non-renewal or plan-change notice.
  2. List your doctors, prescriptions, and pharmacies so you can check them against available coverage.
  3. Compare your options at Medicare.gov Plan Compare.
  4. Ask questions if you’re unsure how a change affects your coverage or enrollment timing.
  5. Submit your enrollment request by December 7 if you want an AEP change to generally begin January 1.
  6. Save your confirmation and any documents related to your new coverage.
